The Ambitious Commoner (Part I)

Chapter 4

As school was winding down for the semester, Daniel and Delia were walking along the courtyard between the boys and girls dorms and the classrooms. Since they had already finished their finals, as they had both finished the history test quickly, they were standing alone.

"Have you ever been in love before?" Delia asked Daniel.

"Only with you, my dear," Daniel said.

"You have only kissed me?" Delia asked.

"Yes," Daniel replied.

"There is something I need to tell you," Delia said.

Holding her shoulders, Daniel replies, "Go ahead and tell me what you want to say."

"You are the sweetest young man I have ever met," Delia replies. "But I have not always been such a sweet girl myself. The reason I am here is because my parents wanted to get me away from some bad influences. In the wealthy area of Puria, I was the neighborhood whore, the one who all the boys went to when they wanted to get laid, or get a blow job, or to try something freaky."

"What is done cannot be undone, my dear," Daniel said.

"I know, but I wanted you to know about it, to know the truth," Delia said, sadly.

"I do not care about your past. Whatever you have done before has been wiped from importance. All you can do is live the best you can now, and I will not hold your past against you," Daniel said.

"You are sweeter than I could ever deserve," Delia said, clutching him closely.

"You are my sweetheart, and I know how nice you have been to me here. That is who you are," Daniel said.

Crying, Delia said, "Why didnt I meet you before? I would never have done those things if someone had loved me for who I was."

"I know, my dear, I know. Listen to me, no one should judge you for the mistakes of your youth," Daniel said. "We all make mistakes. There is no sense in beating someone over the head with the mistakes when they have clearly changed their behavior."

"Thank you so much. I am glad you are my boyfriend," Delia said.

"And I am glad you are my girlfriend," Daniel said.

"I want to give you a favor at the end of the year," Delia said.

"What favor is that?" Daniel asked.

"You will find out. A boyfriend as good as you are should be rewarded," Delia said.

"I look forward to it then," Daniel said, giving her a gentle kiss on her lips.

At this point other students started filing out of the classroom, so Daniel and Delia waved goodbye, so that they would see each other after break. The students, by and large, looked very discouraged. Natonito walked up to Daniel and asked him to come into the principals office. A request from the Directrix is impossible to refuse, so Daniel went, hoping it was a good meeting.

"I have seen your grades from this winter," the Directrix said happily.

"Are they good?" Daniel asked sheepishly.

"You are the brightest student here. How did you get so smart, coming from Cork?" Natonito replied.

"I read a lot in my own free time instead of smoking weed and having sex with cattle like the other kids in the neighborhood," Daniel replied.

"Well, glad to hear it. What do you plan on doing after school?" Natonito asked.

"Well, I hope to be an civil engineer with the Imperial Corps of Engineers," Daniel replied.

"Have you thought about anything other than that?" Natonito asked.

"Well, I would like to do something to help the people of Cork, if I could," Daniel answered. "After all, so many of them are leaving for the cities, and the cities have nothing for them. We need to find a way to make the rural economy worthwhile so that we do not become ruled by suburban elites who pander to the inner city poor for votes."

"Well, how do you plan on being a man of the people?" Natonito asked.

"I thought I might get involved with local politics a little," Daniel said. "For whatever its worth."

"If you ever need any help, just let me know," Natonito said.

"Sure, no problem," Daniel replied.

Daniel walked over to his dorm and saw Delia there. He smiled and waved at her. As the other students passed by all gloomy about their test scores, the two of them began to talk to each other once again.

"I wanted to wish you a good break," Delia said.

"I hope you have a good break as well," Daniel said.

"Ill miss you over break," Delia said as she pulled him close.

"Ill miss you too," Daniel said as he kissed her on the cheek.

"Youre so sweet," Delia said. "I never stop loving how you treat me like a lady."

"But you are a lady, not only are you a noblewoman, but you are a really nice girl too," Daniel said.

"I hope my parents do not mind that you are not a nobleman," Delia said.

"Why should it bother them. Being in the Imperial School should mean I am different from other guys," Daniel said.

"I hope they think that. Maybe they will be glad to hear I am with a nice guy for a change," Delia said.

"Do not let your parents give you too much trouble," Daniel said.

"I wont. I know I have you to stand by me and to help me whenever I am feeling lonely," Delia said. "See you in two weeks."

"See you in two weeks, sweetie," Daniel said. They kissed and then parted.
