The Ambitious Commoner (Part I)

Chapter 2

The class went out to the athletic fields in the huge palace compound. While 26 of the students rushed off to play, Daniel, Henry, Delia, and Cherie stayed back to talk with each other. Cherie had a very concerned look on her face.

"What is wrong?" Daniel asked Cherie.

"Yeah, you still dont look like you feel so good," Delia asked Cherie.

"I just feel something energetic inside of me," Cherie said.

"What do you mean, dear?" Henry asked Cherie.

"I think I might be pregnant," Cherie answered.

"Pregnant?" Henry gulped.

"Yes," Cherie said very softly.

"You mean you two have had sex?" Delia asked Henry and Cherie.

"Yes, we did, the night before most people checked in," Henry answered.

"And you didnt use protection?" Delia asked incredulously.

"No, we didnt," Cherie said, her face facing the ground.

"Cant we talk about something else?" Henry said irritably.

"Okay," Daniel said. "Its not like were trying to needle you or anything."

"I know, this just stresses me out," Henry replied.

"You mean being a father stresses you out. I thought you loved me," Cherie said, hurt.

"Of course I love you," Henry gulped. "But I dont know if I am ready to be a father yet. We are only freshmen in school."

"I know, but since we might be having a baby, you should be ready for it," Cherie answered. Daniel and Delia looked at each other.

"Well, I am sure I would like a baby someday," Delia said. "Just not today."

"Im sure you will make a great mom," Daniel said, giving Cherie a hug.

"Thank you, Daniel. Youre so sweet," Cherie replied.

"And I am sure you will make a great mother too, someday," Daniel said to Delia, giving her a kiss on the cheek.

"Aw, youre a sweetie," Delia said to Daniel, giving him a kiss on the cheek.

"This has been a long day," Daniel said.

"Yes, it has. I got no sleep last night because I was working on the project for history class," Delia said.

"Yeah, that was a hard assignment. It wasnt the presentation that was difficult, but the research for the report was hard," Henry said.

"Yeah, but we all did a good job," Cherie said, smiling.

"Yeah, especially Daniel," Henry said. "Ive never seen the teacher so riled up. You got him good with that subject."

"I wanted to choose a historical topic that would cause a little controversy. If you look deeply enough about any historical subject, you will find controversy, even if you have to look about people whose search for truth in history offends those who are merely passing off their agenda," Daniel replied.

"Wow, you are really serious about history," Delia replied.

"I am serious about almost everything," Daniel said, looking deeply into Delias eyes.

"That is not always a bad thing, but its not going to win you many friends here," Henry said.

"The ones I have are good enough for me," Daniel said.

"I agree," Delia said.

"Do you want to go to the doctors office?" Henry asked Cherie.

"Yes. At least we will be able to find out if I am pregnant or not," Cherie said. "And if I am not pregnant, then we should try to find out what is going on.

"Alright, lets all go together," Daniel said.

"That sounds like a good idea," Delia said. "Lets all stick together, thick or thin."

"Sounds like a plan," Daniel said as he patted her on the shoulder.

The four of them walked to the palace physician. First they knocked on the door, and then they opened it and walked in.

"What are you guys doing here? Did someone get hurt during recess?" the doctor asked.

"No, no, not at all," Daniel said.

"Than why are you here?" the doctor asked snappily.

"We have a problem," Henry said.

"What kind of problem. I cannot do my job unless people tell me what is wrong," the doctor answered.

"I think I may be pregnant," Cherie said softly.

"Pregnant? How could a young girl like yourself get pregnant?" the doctor answered.

"Well, she is my girlfriend, and we had sex," Henry answered.

"This is not my area of expertise. Wait here while I get a ob/gyn specialist," the doctor said.

"Okay," the four answered as the doctor left.

"Alright, we can continue our conversation here," Daniel said.

"Ive never made love in a doctors office before," Delia said with a laugh.

"Youve made love before?" Daniel asked.

"Yeah, but I always use protection. My mom wanted me here so I could be around nicer guys. It is hard for a Purian noblewoman to find good guys back at home," Delia answered.

"I guess Im the only virgin in here then," Daniel said glumly.

"Dont feel bad. Sometimes I wish I had not given up my virginity," Delia said. "But I was a dumb girl, and got taken advantage of by some older guys. You are the nicest guy I have ever met. I wish I could have given my virginity to you."

"Thats the nicest thing Ive ever heard from a girl," Daniel replied.

"Im sure I will tell you nicer things in the future," Delia said with a twinkle in her eye.

"Yes, Daniel, you dont have to feel bad about not having sex. I think you are a really nice guy. I wish there were more people like you," Cherie said sweetly.

"You do?" Daniel said.

"Yes, I do wish there were more guys like you," Cherie said.

"If girls wanted there to be more guys like me, they should like guys like me more," Daniel said.

"I like you. Is that enough," Delia said. She then turned and gave him a french kiss.

"Of course it is enough," Daniel said happily.

At this point the doctor returned with the ob/gyn specialist. They looked at Cherie and ran some tests on her while the other three people watched. Finally, the specialist spoke.

"Yes, you are pregnant," the specialist said.

"Is it a boy or a girl?" Henry asked.

"Are you the father?" the specialist asked.

"Yes, I am," Henry answered.

"It is a boy," the specialist said. "I want to keep an eye on the mother. You are all students at the Imperial School, right?"

"Yes, we are," Daniel said.

"Okay, I will let the Directrix know about this," the specialist said.

"My brother-in-law will not be pleased," Cherie said sadly.

"Yes, my uncle will not be happy about this," Henry said glumly.

"You are both connected to the Directrix?" the specialist said, a bit shocked.

"Yes, I am the younger sister of the Directrixs wife," Cherie said.

"And I am the son of Senator Oen Bravia, the brother-in-law of the Directrix," Henry answered.

"And who are you other two?" the specialist said.

"We are standing by friends in times of need. I am a student from Bravia, the son of a household of commoners. My name is Daniel Miller," Daniel answered.

"And I am the daughter of a Purian noble house, my name is Delia Sanchez," Delia answered.

"Okay, you may all go back to your dorms now. It is probably close to dinner time for you all," the doctor said.

"Alright. Have a good day," Daniel said.

"And you too," the doctor and specialist said. "Miss Longbert, take care of that baby."

"I will," Cherie said with a bittersweet smile.

The four of them walked back to the dorms, where everyone was looking at them. They tried to avoid the attention, but the students immediately made rumors about what the two obvious couples had been doing. Needless to say, it was not presented in a flattering light to the four students.
